Introducing Alto’s Odyssey: The Lost City
Join Alto and friends as they venture deeper into the endless desert than ever before and uncover its best-kept secrets.
We’re excited to announce that Alto’s Odyssey: The Lost City — an all-new special edition of our 2018 award winning title — is now available on Apple Arcade!
The Lost City marks the first new Alto title in just over three years, as well as our first official launch under our new studio identity. You can head over to the App Store right now to download the game, or keep reading for a little more about what to expect, how the project took shape, and how it fits into our bigger plans for Land & Sea.
A Brief History
For those who may have missed our studio announcement, let us do a quick introduction: Land & Sea is the formalisation of the previously unnamed core development team behind the Alto series, founded by series co-creator and lead artist/developer, Harry Nesbitt.
We’ll continue to serve in this capacity, working closely with Snowman under the banner of ‘Team Alto’ — a name established to describe the collaboration between both studios — while also developing brand new IPs centred around our shared love of nature, history and folklore.
More information can be found in our press kit.
Returning to the Endless Desert
As a team, this is the first time we’ve returned to one of our existing titles and sought to expand upon the core experience in such a significant way. In doing so, it was important for us to strike a careful balance between introducing new elements, while preserving the original flow of the game. We’ve taken great care to seamlessly weave the new features of The Lost City into the core progression, such that it feels compelling for new and existing players alike.
In fact, many of the ideas that formed the basis of The Lost City, were things we’d originally explored during the development of Alto’s Odyssey back in 2017, but for one reason or another had ended up on the cutting room floor. This was the perfect opportunity to return to these ideas with a fresh perspective and really give them the time they needed to really do them justice.
As for what those ideas entail, we don’t want to spoil all the surprises, but you can get a small taste of things by watching our trailer below:
A Growing Team
The development of The Lost City has been an exciting time for Land & Sea, serving as a familiar backbone as we move into a new phase of the studio. While we’ve been lucky enough to continue working with some familiar faces, we’ve also welcomed some talented new teammates aboard.
Since the launch of the original Alto’s Odyssey back in 2018, we’ve been joined by two new full-time members; namely Senior Programmer Joel Herber (Fall Guys) and Producer Jair McBain (Mini Motorways, Art of Rally). Both Joel and Jair have brought a great deal of game development experience to the team, and have already meaningfully contributed toward the evolution of the Alto series and studio as a whole.
We were also delighted to work again with our original composer, Todd Baker (Monument Valley 2, Dreams), who was able to return to his existing soundtrack and craft it into something entirely new and fresh. Grab a pair of headphones and check out the track in its entirety below:
Additionally, we have been able to collaborate with the wonderful UK-based illustrator Ollie Hoff in the production of some key art and design pieces for the release of The Lost City, including exciting new merchandise that is soon to be announced.
Next Steps
Finally, we’d be remiss to leave out mention of what’s next for Land & Sea. Alongside our support of the Alto series, we’ve also been continuing development on an all-new title, originally teased back in September of last year.
While we don’t have more details to share at this point, we’re hoping to reveal more in the coming months. For all the latest updates, be sure to sign up to our newsletter and follow us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram to be the first to hear any announcements!
All the best,
The Land & Sea Team
